NCI coordinates the National Cancer Program and supports it by providing funding and resources to individual researchers and institutions, providing leadership to national infrastructures that care for patients and develop new methods to treat and prevent cancer, and conducting research in especially challenging areas. Progress against cancer depends on many types of research—including basic, translational, and clinical—across different research areas, from the biology of cancer cells to studies of large populations. Regardless of the research type or area, supporting the best science and the best scientists is of paramount importance to NCI.
