Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms

Pancreatic cancer does not have early signs or symptoms, making it very hard to detect in its early stages. Symptoms usually begin after the cancer has spread. As the cancer grows, signs and symptoms may include:

  • pain in the upper or middle abdomen and back
  • jaundice, which includes symptoms such as:
    • yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes
    • light-colored stools
    • dark urine
    • itching
  • weight loss for no known reason
  • loss of appetite
  • fatigue
  • gas or bloating
  • nausea and vomiting
  • swelling in the legs
  • gallbladder or liver enlargement

Some conditions may be signs of pancreatic cancer:

  • New-onset diabetes. Diabetes is a common condition diagnosed later in life, and many people who develop diabetes will never develop pancreatic cancer. However, a new diagnosis of diabetes, also called new-onset diabetes, in someone with no risk factors for the condition such as family history, obesity, or heart disease may be an early sign of pancreatic cancer. That is because pancreatic cancer destroys the ability of the pancreas to secrete hormones, including insulin. If you have new-onset diabetes and no known risk factors for diabetes, it is important to discuss checking for other signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer with your doctor.
  • Blood clots. Advanced pancreatic cancer makes your blood clot more easily. Symptoms of blood clots include swollen, painful legs or shortness of breath. A newly diagnosed blood clot—especially if you have other symptoms of pancreatic cancer—should lead to further tests.

Symptoms of pancreatic cancer are usually the same in both males and females.

It is important to check with your doctor if you have concerning signs or symptoms. Keep in mind that these symptoms can also be caused by other, less serious conditions. Your doctor will ask you when your symptoms started and how often you’re having them. Your doctor will most likely recommend an abdominal ultrasound or CT scan of your abdomen as a first step in diagnosing what is causing your symptoms.
