American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) 2026 Annual Symposium
Are you attending this year’s AMIA annual symposium? If so, join two of our CBIIT staff members as they moderate panels in artificial intelligence (AI), clinical informatics, and real-world data (RWD).
- Panel 1— Building a Federated Multimodal AI Network for Cancer Trial Matching: Co-Design Lessons from Four Cancer Centers | 2:00–3:15 p.m. ET | Moderated by Dr. Umit Topaloglu
- Learn about the federated learning and multi-modal AI work that CBIIT’s informatics program is championing. Dr. Topaloglu and members of NCI-designated cancer centers will discuss how their teams are implementing a network for trial eligibility signal extraction and trial matching (all while preserving patient data privacy). The five speakers will highlight the network’s architecture, fine-tuning, methods for text classification and structured extraction, and prospective validation design for real-world trial matching workflows.
- Panel 2— Collect Once, Use Many: Building a Federated Health Learning Infrastructure to Modernize Research and Public Health | 3:30–4:45 p.m. ET | Moderated by Dr. Shannon Silkensen
- Discover how NIH is developing its Data COUNTSTM (Collect Data Once, Use Numerous Times) program to provide the cancer research community with access to standardized, provenanced, electronic health records (EHR) data. NIH, NCI, and the University of Kentucky are exploring a pipeline to extract data directly from EHR, have human registrars review it, and use data to populate the university hospital’s cancer registry. Additionally, speakers will share how the N3C, a centralized data platform administered by NCATS, could ingest, harmonize, and provide secure access to the data generated through the Data COUNTS program. The Data COUNTS program complements the work of NCI’s RWD program, which works to improve the quality, completeness, and collection of EHR data for cancer research.

About the Speakers
Dr. Topaloglu is the branch chief of NCI CBIIT’s Clinical & Translational Research Informatics Branch (CTRIB). In this position, he leads NCI’s clinical research informatics strategy across precision medicine, clinical trials reporting, semantic infrastructure, RWD, and AI. He is also the founder and leader of the Federated Learning-based AI in Multimodal Exploration (FLAIMME) consortium—a national consortium helping NCI-designated cancer centers share AI models while protecting data privacy.
Shannon Silkensen, Ph.D.
Dr. Silkensen is NCI’s program director for RWD and a health science administrator in CBIIT’s CTRIB. She advances the USCDI+ Cancer Team’s work by coordinating the development of data sets and FHIR Implementation Guides. She also serves as scientific advisor to the NIH Data COUNTS program, where she leads use case development and data harmonization efforts to strengthen the quality, interoperability, and research use of RWD.
