SIP Current Interns

Welcome to NCI! Each November, the NIH recruits students across the nation to gain research experience in the biomedical sciences. High school students, undergrads, and graduate students are selected to participate in cancer research across the NCI Divisions, Offices, and Centers (DOCs). There will be numerous events designed to help you learn more about the NCI, assist you in your projects, and encourage your professional development. Summer is always an exciting time, and completing an internship isn’t easy, but we hope that you are able to gain the skills and tools you need for your next career stage.

Summer Orientations and Mandatory Training

There will be a lot of information available to help you get started in the summer. The best way to get acclimated is to attend the summer orientations: one hosted by the NIH Office of Intramural Training & Education (OITE) and one hosted by your Division, Office, or Center (DOC) at NCI. All summer interns are required to attend an OITE orientation, which covers NIH culture and NIH-wide resources, and an NCI orientation, which covers NCI-specific administrative details and resources.

NCI-Specific Summer Orientation & Trainings

Be sure to check with your Summer Coordinator to determine which orientation and mandatory trainings are required for your internship. The requirements will be different depending on the campus location of your internship and the focus of your research project.

Summer Curriculum

Both NIH and NCI offer workshops, seminars, and events to support your career and professional goals. The NIH OITE offers a weekly curriculum, summer intensives focused on specific topics in science, and summer journal clubs. Calendar details are shared regularly via email and are also available on the Summer Intern Curriculum webpage.

The training offices at NCI have also developed a curriculum to complement NIH OITE's offerings. Be sure to check with your Summer Coordinator for additional DOC-specific events.

For CCR Interns, check out CCR Training Opportunities for Current Fellows (NIH log-in required).
