This visit will highlight the importance of cancer research, global collaboration, and diversity; with special emphasis on World Cancer Research Day (WCRD) and other important NCI and HICCC programs:

  • World Cancer Research Day (WCRD):  Held every year on September 24, this year’s WCRD theme is “Support research to prevent cancer and catch it early” and focuses on equity - addressing global cancer health disparities, particularly in the areas of prevention, early detection research, and care. WCRD is supported by the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC). Follow the event on Twitter @columbiacancer.
  • Cancer Centers Program:  HICCC, one of the first of NCI's 71 Designated Cancer Centers, celebrates its 50th anniversary. HICCC is recognized for their scientific leadership and community service.
  • NCORP: HICCC is also one of 14 NCI Community Oncology Research Program Minority/Underserved Community sites in the nation. HICCC has enrolled more than 40% minority participants in cancer clinical trials, bringing the latest treatment options to their community, one of the most diverse in the country.
  • YES in THE HEIGHTS: NCI’s Youth Enjoy Science (YES) program mentors local high school and undergraduate students providing experiences to work in a research lab, participate in cutting-edge cancer research experiences, and see first-hand what a career in research might be like.
