What CAPRI Does
The CAPRI Program builds capacity through collaborative partnerships that leverage the strengths of RLIs and CCs. Joint research, shared resources, and coordinated training strengthen research environments and expand cancer programs at RLIs. These collaborations provide access to advanced technologies, expertise, mentorship, and training for ESIs, supporting sustainable programs and improving competitiveness for external funding. Overall, CAPRI enhances scientific capacity, advances cancer research, and supports long-term workforce growth.
The institutions in each partnership are expected to work collaboratively to:
- Strengthen cancer research capacity at Resource Limited Institutions (RLIs) by developing cancer research, enhancing institutional research infrastructure and competitiveness, and promoting the career development of ESIs and trainees.
- Develop and implement coordinated cancer-related outreach and education initiatives that are integrated with the partnership’s research priorities and extend the benefits of scientific advances to communities nationwide.
Each partnership is expected to include:
- Administrative Core: will provide day-to-day administrative support for the partnership, ensuring bidirectional and integral collaborations across institutions.
- Full and Pilot Research Projects: each new or competing renewal application should propose at least one Full Research Project and one Pilot Research Project.
- Planning and Evaluation Core: provides continuous process, outcomes, and impact planning and evaluation of partnership activities.
- Outreach and Engagement Core: provides support and is aligned with the partnership’s cancer research and includes bidirectional activities to develop and share targeted educational materials with surrounding communities.
- Shared Resources: applicants may propose the development of resources/infrastructure that augments the cancer research capability of the RLIs, the collaborative research of both partnering institutions, and/or enhance cancer research.
It is expected that all activities should be planned to:
- Increase the participation of the RLIs in the nation’s cancer research and research education enterprise.
- Increase the competitive research capacity of RLIs.
- Increase competitive grant applications from scientists supported by the partnership.
- Increase the involvement and effectiveness of CCs in cancer research.
- Develop effective and meaningful outreach, engagement, and education initiatives that will impact the surrounding communities
- Identify and share innovative methods and approaches that strengthen and sustain each partnership.
