Global Cancer Stigma Research Workshop - Day 1

On Day 1 of the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Global Cancer Stigma Research Workshop, sponsored by NCI's Center for Global Health (CGH) and Division of Cancer Control and Population Sciences (DCCPS), Dr. Satish Gopal gave opening remarks. Sessions focused on the impact of stigma on global cancer control and the domestic and global cancer stigma research conducted by NIH/NCI grantees. Two plenary talks included, Dr. Anne Stangl, Division of Global HIV & TB, Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on “The Health Stigma and Discrimination Framework: An Overview;” and Carolyn Taylor, Founder, Global Focus on Cancer, on “The Global Face of Cancer Stigma.” Day 1 topics also included lung cancer and intersectional stigmas. On both days, participants explored research gaps for measuring stigma and developing context-specific stigma reduction interventions within the cancer care continuum in diverse global settings.

On Day 2 of the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Global Cancer Stigma Research Workshop, Dr. Sonali Johnson, Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) gave the first of two plenary talks, “Myths, Misconceptions and Cancer Stigma;” and Dr. Lawrence Yang, New York University (NYU), gave the second on the ‘Stigma of Health Conditions in the Global Context: A “What matters most perspective” and Applications to Cancer Stigma.’  Day 2 focused on interventions for cancer stigma.
