ascites

(uh-SY-teez)
Abnormal buildup of fluid in the abdomen that may cause swelling. In late-stage cancer, tumor cells may be found in the fluid in the abdomen. Ascites also occurs in patients with liver disease.

Ascites is as an abnormal buildup of fluid in the abdomen that may cause swelling. It occurs when fluid builds up between the two layers of tissue called the peritoneum. The peritoneum lines the abdominal wall and covers most of the organs in the abdomen.
