screening mammogram

(SKREE-ning MA-muh-gram)
An x-ray image of the breast used to check for breast cancer in people who have no signs or symptoms of the disease. Screening mammograms often make it possible to detect tumors that cannot be felt. They can also find microcalcifications (tiny deposits of calcium) that sometimes indicate the presence of breast cancer.
